PatPlans (Patient Insurance Coverage)

Assign insurance plans to patients. Required before creating claims. Per OpenDental API.

What are PatPlans in OpenDental?

PatPlans indicate coverage—they link a patient to an InsSub. If there is no PatPlan row, the patient has no coverage. Each PatPlan has an Ordinal (1 = primary, 2 = secondary) and Relationship (Self, Spouse, Child, etc.). Family members on the same policy share one InsSub; each gets their own PatPlan pointing to that InsSub. Create PatPlans after InsSubs; required before submitting Claims.
